How to juice fast
How to juice fast? I often get asked a lot of juice fast questions but the main question I get asked is that of how to juice fast. There are many ways one can fast but when you do a juice fast, there are a few things you need to keep in mind if you want to reap the benefits. Planning is very essential if you want your juice fasting experience to be a rewarding one. You should plan your goals, your recipes, your shopping lists, and even your schedule. So let’s dive into my thoughts and opinions on how to juice fast.
How to juice fast tip 1
First you need to set a goal. Your juice fasting goal may be a set amount of days you wish to juice or it could even be a certain weight that you wish to reach. I always tell people if it’s their first time juicing to at least give it a full week. This will ensure your body gets detoxed and cleansed but will also get your body acquainted to being healthy. Juicing for a full week will also help reduce your appetite, and restore your true sense of taste. I was amazed at how differently food tasted when I went back eating whole foods again.
How to juice fast tip 2
Setting up your juice recipes and shopping lists plays a big role in your convenience. Let’s face it, you don’t really want to be heading to the store every day to get those veggies. In planning how to juice fast, it’s important to always have fresh fruits and vegetables on hand. You will be surprised at how much you can go through in a day. In a day I typically go through 4 apples, 1-2 lemons, a half bag of spinach, 4-8 stalks of celery, 4 cucumbers, and much more depending on the recipes I use. If your clueless where to start, I have 3 day plans, 7 day plans, and 14 day plans already laid out along with their shopping lists for you to get started.
How to juice fast tip 3
Setting up a schedule is also very important when figuring out how to juice fast. You typically want to drink at least 4 drinks (16oz-20oz) per day. My rule of thumb for “how to juice fast” is if you feel hungry, drink a juice! Don’t starve yourself of nutrients. If your goal is to lose weight, don’t think you will lose weight faster by drinking less juice. In actuality if your body isn’t getting the nutrients it needs when you drink less and it will go into lock down mode and hold on to the weight it has. It’s very important to stick to the 4 servings or more when planning how to juice fast.
How to juice fast tip 4
When juicing make sure you drink a lot of water throughout the day. I drink 12-16oz of water immediately after I drink a juice and drink plenty of water in between. One of the main purposes of juicing is to cleanse your digestive system. In order to cleanse your digestive system you need to keep hydrated.
How to juice fast tip 5
A lot of people who want to know “how to juice fast” typically ask me about juicers and about blenders. You can’t use a blender in place of a juicer. It simply defeats the purpose of juicing and turns your drink into a smoothie. The biggest difference is that when using a juicer, you do not get the fibers that you do from a blender. This is important because in order to juice fast, you don’t want to have those fibers. Juicing eliminates the need for your digestive system to work at digesting those fibers, therefore giving you back all the energy it would normally consume in the digestive process.
How to juice fast tip 6
When you finally make the investment to get a juicer there are a few things you must know. Make sure your juicer is at least 700 watts. This will ensure you have the power to juice the fruits and veggies without any issues. It’s important to make sure your juicer is simple to assemble, disassemble, and clean. Nobody wants to spend a half hour or more making a juice and cleaning up. So make sure your juicer is easy to clean.
How to juice fast tip 7
When I talk to people about how to juice fast, I find that they spend so much time prepping and cleaning. This always comes as a shock to me since it takes me 10 minutes to prep, juice, drink, and clean my juicer. I took some time to organize my fridge when I started. Another time saver was pre prepping my meals. I suggest getting gallon size freezer bags and prepping your meals ahead of time. That way all you have to do is grab the bag and everything in it is ready to go down the juicer.
How to juice fast tip 8
When juicing, I make it a rule to stick with 20% fruits and 80% veggies. If your goal is to lose weight you should stick to that rule. Fruits contain a lot of sugar so it’s best to keep those for your morning drinks. I juice a lot of spinach for the protein and because spinach helps you lose water weight very fast.
I hope I helped answer some questions on how to juice fast. Juicing is such a healthy and beneficial way to achieve your goals of losing weight, detoxing your system, and providing your body with the many nutrients it needs but has been deprived of. I would love to hear your thoughts on how to juice fast below. Thanks and Happy Juicing!

Hi JOJ,
I’m on day two of my juicin. Its been good so far. My question is timing of drinking the juice. For example, I know its best to drink the juice as soon as you make it. At work I can’t bring my juicer. So, is it okay to juice around 9am and make my lunch and afternoon juice as well? As soon as I get to work the juices go in my fridge. I just wanted to see if I get the same nutrients drinking it 3-5 hours later…
Thanks a ton!
your blog is very helpful content thank you very much and it’s my blog site http://www.bestjuicerhealthy.com/
Hi. I’m starting my juice feast with enimas on Feb 14th. I’ve been juicing on and off for many years but recently gained about 20 pound this past year on top of the extra 30 I was carrying. Ugggg. My joints ache and I have trouble falling asleep. I’m also going to do a parasite and liver cleanse. I wish all of you well and the ability to meet your goals.
“I was amazed at how differently food tasted when I went back eating whole foods again.” Boy you can say that again! Food taste so much better and I always feel so much better!
Somewhere I read in a health book that we should try not to eat fruits and vegetables togetther, because fruits are digested faster and so it fouls up the digestion. Comments?
Iris,
It is true that fruit are digested faster then Veg however it doesn’t foul up your digestive system, it does however delay the fruit from being digested first, This doesn’t happen with a juice drink as all the fruit and veg are being digested at the same time and since the juice is liquidised the body can absorb both Fruit and veg simultaneously, this is why you need a minimum of 4 juices a day.
I am no expert neutralist but I do know a lot of PT trainers and health specialist

I’m starting my juicing journey on Monday, January 19th 2015. im 360 pounds and is very eager to make the lifestyle change needed in order to achieve long term health. I have been drinking juice for several years, but only 1 a day in the morning and then eating the bad food in the afternoon. I’m determined to make this work. My mind is made up! I’m purchasing a juicer tomorrow and starting Monday. I am heavier than what I have ever been . Even heavier than when I was pregnant with both my pregnancies! I’m always tired, and my body is always aching… Time I do something about it, and stop complaining.. I’m super exited to get started …
Shams, welcome to JOJ and congrats on deciding to start your juice fast! It’s going to make such a difference in your life. I’m always here if you have any questions or need support. Keep me posted on your progress. I wish you all the best Shams! Cheers!
I’m starting the 2nd round of my 7-day detox today. The first time was last year and it worked great for me. I felt better and lost 11 pounds. Hope to extend it to 14 days this year, but I’m setting a conservative goal for now. We’ll see after seven days.
Jesse, that’s fantastic. Congrats on losing the 11 pounds. Keep me updated on your progress this time around. Cheers!
Today, I begin my first Juice Fast following your recommendations. I hope to lose weight and reset my appetite to healthy eating. My first goal is to get 14 days in.I am keeping a diary of juices i drink and how I feel for future reference and motivation. my reevaluation date is December 24th,2014. I hope to give myself the gift of better health and renewed energy by this date and if so will continue on with 30 day fast. This fast was recommended to me by my family physician.
what type of juicer would you recommend?
Thank you so much! This was the exact information I was looking for. And has help me to start somewhere and I found that it was also straight to the point. Especially about 20% fruits & 80% vegetables! I will bookmark this page. Do you have any other posts that I could read?
Glad you found it helpful Nicole! There are plenty of other articles within the site. Cheers!
I have a juicer and was using it on and off but I am 60 days from my wedding and am currently at 278# I am going to start with a salt water cleanse and then hit the juicer with all I got for the next 30-45 days if I can hold out that long! thanks for the support and recipes!
This piece of writing is really a nice one it helps new internet visitors, who are wishing for blogging.
My first day is going well so far. A friend recommended to use some protein powder, but you noted above that spinach will give the necessary protein. Do I need to worry about protein? or spinach will suffice?
Also, I can interchangabely use kale for spinach?
Thanks a lot for your advice!
Yes, you can use unsweetened unflavoured protein powder. But keep it a bit under the normal amount stated on the box and instead replace that with protein filled foods. Good luck
You shouldn’t worry about protein. Juicing the proper vegetables will provide all that is necessary. The body has the knowledge to do the rest.
Good post. I became checking frequently this kind of web site and I am empowered! Highly helpful details exclusively the remainder segment I take care of such information significantly. I was in search of this kind of a number of data for just a quite a while. Many thanks and also with success.
Vero, how long can you refigerate ginger or should you? I buy fresh ginger for some of my juicing recipes. I’m new to juicing but would like to try the 3 day juice fast for weight loss.
Vero, I read elsewhere that you can make juices the morning of and refrigerate them
I have a question too. I’ve been on the juice fast for 6 days now. It’s mostly gone well although I always feel hungry at night. I’ve been drinking around 100oz a day. Today was a more challenging day. I had a headache, was hungry all day and am very hungry tonight. Should I be drinking more? Adding food? Or is it common to have some hungry days on the longer fasts?
I was hoping to go thirty days but with this kind of hunger I don’t think I could make it. Thanks
sipping on water all through-out the day will help with hunger. You can also take ibuprofen if you have a headache.
Is it very important to make the juice and drink it right away or you can make all the four drinks for the day and refrigerated them?
I am on day 3 of juicing and I will admit the first 2 days were very hard since I have drink diet coke for ten years and I am 3 fulls day of no diet cokes and only juicing and water and I am starting to feel so good its crazy I am so excited !!!! I want to lose 50 pounds and I have already lost 7 !!! I love this just love it !!!!!!!
Hello, I want to know if I can drink coffee or tea on this 7 day juice fast, and if so can I add cream & sugar.
Sincerely
Mrs Berry
No. That defeats the purpose of drinking only the juice and water.
Hello Donnie. Me and my cousin are starting the 3 Day Juice fast to see how well we do. I, myself am trying to lose 45lbs by the 24th of may. And she wants to lose another 100lbs. We are really looking forward to this fast. Hoping we can do the 14day real soon.
Hey Donnie ,i Iive in Germany and I’m 24 , I remember on 22.October.2013 I had a shitty day in which I lost my job due to downsizing, failed in two critical exams and my doctor told me that my blood pressure is dangerously high.
I remember hating myself for being lazy for not taking care of my health because of my busy schedule,
So I was randomly surfing through the internet and stumbled upon this page , but at first I wasn’t intrested thinking it’s impossible to do live only on juice , but as I continued reading I saw the part where you said in the third day you won’t feel hungry anymore, so I started it, mainly the mean green , after two week I started to eat grilled chicken and fish because I didn’t want to lose muscle.
Today , after 5 and a half months , I lost 25 kg (from 110 to 85) and I have 10 kg more to lose. as for my health ,
Every thing is amazing. I have energy from the juice like I never had before I work out 5 times a week.
As for my job , I was able to create a small business in which I managed to sell juice to a regular clients who wanted to lose weight as well , I don’t earn a lot but it’s more than what I earned before and it covers my expenses until I graduate .
So I like to thank you for writing this page.
hello, how do I measure out the 20%fruit and 80% veggies?? or is that an awful stupid question?
hello,
I would like to know if I can add pea protein powder to my juices to get a lot of protein during the day… I wish to loose weight…Would it be ok ?
thanks!
I’m doing my all my research today! I hope to get my boyfriend and I started on our juicing plan today or tomorrow! We have different goals. Mine is more appetite control and weight loss whereas his is about more healthy habits. I’m excited and nervous! Wish us luck.
My wife and I are planning on trying to do the 3 day juice fast and I just bought an extractor (like a nutri-bullet) will this work instead of a juicer? Those recipes call to add water, but I’ve seen in the comments where Donnie said not to mix water, so I’m not sure if this will work. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I would like to start juice fast but I here that it isn’t cheep. I am not working right now so I want to know if there are recipes that won’t burn to big of hole in someone’s pocket.
Christine, welcome to JOJ and thank you for your comment. You have heard wrong. Juicing costs roughly between $10-$15 per day depending on the type of produce you purchase. That’s fairly cheap to feed yourself for the whole day. Cheers!
I just bought my juicer today, after reading all the comments and how it’s working for everyone. I am so excited to start tomorrow I need to loose approx. 70 pounds and also to help me clear my skin since I’m starting to get adult acne. Wish me luck, I’m motivated but I have low will power.
Lorena, welcome to JOJ and congrats on starting your juice fast! I’m sure you will reach your goals and then some! Keep me posted on your success, I’m always here if you have questions. Cheers!
I started my fast yesterday. Trying to go 10-14 days of just food no solid foods. Im currently 5’6 165 pounds sbd im trying to reach 150 pounds. Currently on day 2 but I’m using the Nutribullet and I’m already feeling lighter and full of energy. I was a bit skeptical on working out while on my fast but I was surprised at how much energy I got after drinking my juice an hour before the gym. I killed my 1 hour cardio.
Hi Donnie,
Is it recommended to make the juices ahead of time for breakfast, lunch, and dinner? Since I work during the day I don’t know if it is feasible for me to make the juice during lunch time.
Ok I drank a cup of coffee on day 4 of my fast at 8pm at night…well I didn’t sleep till 7am the next morning!! Seems my body wasn’t used to the caffeine anymore…I think I read that You can’t drink coffee because the caffeine makes ur body work more when u fast u want ur body to go though less stress and caffeine makes your (body stress) i have found it tought not drinking coffee but the determination to lose weight has kept me from drinking it plus I don’t want to be awake all night again
I have been on the juice fast for 6 days so far lost 9lb no you can’t drink tea or coffee just water and juice oh and maybe green tea (if you like it) it really is a fantastic way to lose weight and u feel great and have lots of energy, I’m trying the 60 day like the documentary fat sick and nearly dead, the first few days I wanted to eat real food so I drank more juice I make up a 32oz drink every meal I drink that 3 times a day and I don’t feel hungry at all and the cravings for food have gone now…anyone considering losing weight I really recommend the juice fast just check out some recipes and juice my fave is sunset passion and the mean green is my lunch and dinner (it keeps me fuller for longer)
HI,
What about coffee? Can I still have my black coffee in the morning? If not, why?
Thanks!
I am super pumped about juicing….I haqve been juicing for about 2 months but I JUST UPGRADED aqnd purchased a juice extractor 900 watts 0f crazy power. My question iswhat about adding hemp powder or cgia seeds or flax seeds. I donht see these ingredients in any of your recipes..
thanks in advance
Karen

This answered questions I hadn’t even thought to ponder. Like percentage fruit:veggies. And the difference between smoothie and juicing. Thank you!
is protien powder ok to add to the juices?
Personally, I would NOT add protein powders to any juice as they contain non-natural elements. If you’re concerned about getting enough protein you can try adding Spirulina (both powder form and pills), powdered Wheat Grass and Nutritional Yeast to your juices. I also add organic Flaxseed oil to my juices in the morning. Good luck.
i am looking to start juicing. i heard great things about it. but i keep seeing things about fasting as well. what is the difference between juicing and fasting. i am looking to cleanse as well as lose weight. thanks in advance
I too have just ventured into ‘juicing’ territory myself but I believe (from my research so far) is juicing is drinking your fruits and vegetables. Whereas fasting means no intake of solid food.
I started today and I could use all the support I can get.
I want to start getting healthy again by cleaning my system and lose a few pounds to jump start my weight loss Journey. I want to start on Saturday but my concern is that i don’t have an actual user, i have the Montel Williams blender. Would that be okay to start the juicing process?
Hi Donnie thanks for the information.
I am going to start my 60 day juice fast tomorrow. Wish me good luck, I have 60 lbs to loose. Based on my results after this 60 days will go for another 40days with a decent gap. Anyone wants to join me tomorrow.. please lets shred our weight with gaining health benefits.
Can you tell me burning 1500 calories while on this Diet is good enough to lose more weight?
Dolly, I wish you all the best on your juice fast! I’m sure you will hit your goal if you are determined and stick with it! You will be successful! Don’t focus with burning calories, you will find that it’s best to rest and recover during the first few days while you go through detox. After that you can start adding in lite exercise but make sure you listen to your body. If you feel worn out and tired then you may be trying to do too much at once. Keep me posted on your progress Dolly, I’m here if you have questions. Cheers!
Hi dolly i am starting on monday! good luck
Hello all, i’m on day 10 of my juice fast and I’m feeling great. I have had what felt like mini headaches but drinking a juice takes care of it. I want to go to 30 days and possibly even to 60 like Joe and Phil but my wife is asking me to drop the fast and go see a doctor to come up with a sensible diet. I want to know what you think about this, especially since I seem to have lost about 15 pounds already.
Socks, welcome to JOJ and congrats on 10 days of juicing! Ask your wife what is not sensible about juice? It’s loaded with more nutrition that you get out of a normal meal and it’s a good way to help reset your eating habits. If you do plan on going longer than 30 days then it would be a good idea to check with a doctor to make sure everything is how it should be for you to continue. Here’s an article I wrote on how to eat after your juice fast. This will help you come up with a plan to incorporate solids back into your diet when you are ready. http://www.justonjuice.com/how-to-eat-after-a-fast/
If you are losing weight and getting more healthy in the process then I see no reason to stop unless you’ve met your goal and want to work on maintaining your current weight. I wish you all the best Socks, keep me posted on your progress and know that I’m here if you have questions. Cheers!
After watching the documentary , Fat, sick, and Nearly Dead we decided to try the fast. We each have close to 100 pounds to lose. We aredrinking 5-6 juices per day and drinkinglots of water. We are on day 8 and hubby lost 9.2 pounds and I have lost 5.2 pds. He is 6.1 ft. Tall and I am 5.2. I think I am drinking too much juive but my husband says we are following joe cross plan and it does not matter on your height or sex . Your opinion please!
Teresaa, the most important thing to understand on a juice fast is that you should have a juice when you are hungry. Everyone is different so you may have more or less than your husband. Just stick to listening to your body and having a juice when you feel hungry. Don’t skip a juice thinking it will help you lose weight faster. You must ensure you are getting the nutrition your body desires. Cheers!
I’m on my first day of a 22 day juice fast. I feel fine so far but I can’t seem to shake the taste of these! I gag every time I try and drink one and end up just chugging it with my nose plugged. If there’s cucumber in it then that’s all I can taste is cucumber. Is there a recipe that taste more like fruit than vegetables but still has more veggies than fruit in it? I know people say to make it 20% fruit and 80% veggies. I need to lose weight for my wedding and will not go wedding dress shopping until I lose the weight. PLEASE HELP!
Thank you!
I had that same problem. I started using only half the cucumber and peeling some skin off it. Also, look up some recipes with mostly fruit to start out with. After a while you will get accustomed to it and it won’t bother you I bet. Pineapple, strawberries, red peppers, blue berries and carrots and most other colorful fruit all have really strong flavors and drown out the other stuff in the drink. So maybe try some recipes with those in it.
Mary, it sounds like you aren’t used to having fresh fruits and veggies. I can say the taste was different during the first day as opposed to the third day. You’re taste buds will adjust. You can cut the cucumber portion in half too. Try adding more lemon or another apple to your juices. Make them enjoyable for you! You will lose that weight and you will succeed on your fast Mary. Keep me posted on your progress. Cheers!
Hello,
I am new to leaving comments, threads, etc. but i am eager to join the conversations! I have been debating the juicing alternative, and the other day i bought a juicer, went to the grocery store and started the next day. I made sure to clean out the fridge and stock up on a week’s worth of fruits and veggies. I am on day 2 of the juice fast, and so far so good! Donnie, i know you said to relax with exercise, but I have been following an exercise program, and thus far i feel fine with combining the juicing and exercise, i will touch base again in another few days(after the detox period) and let everyone know how i am feeling. My primary reason for doing this is to see how i will feel, i am doing a 14 day juice fast. Good luck to everyone who is thinking to start i say go for it!!! the community online is so vast and very supportive, thanks for reading everyone!!
Kgustin, welcome to JOJ and congrats on day 2 of your juice fast! While it is good to rest and relax, it’s best to listen to your body. If you feel fine to combine exercise and juicing then by all means do so! It’s only going to help you in the long run Kgustin. I wish you all the best in your juicing adventure! Please keep me posted on your progress and know that I’ll be here if you have questions. Cheers Kgustin!
I’m trying to get my wife to juice but she is allergic to SO MUCH! Strawberries, kiwi, pineapple, lemons, oranges, coconuts, limes (everything that contains citrus), wheat & milk (listed from worst to least based on reactions). Other berries and fruit she is unsure of because she is scared to try them. Is it possible to get a wholesome juicing experience with all of these restrictions? Is citrus that big of a deal?
Jacob, it sounds like she would have to go straight veggie on her fast. That’s not a problem if she can overcome the taste of the juice without the fruits. It may also be a good idea for her to take a multi-vitamin to ensure she gets the needed nutrition since she’s leaving out the fruits. Cheers!
I’m looking at starting the 7 day juice fast next Monday. I have a few questions – 1)what do I do after the fast – I’ll be all shiny and new and don’t want to clog myself up again. So how do I go back to “normal” chewing food?
2) If I feel good and am loosing weight to I just keep going with the fast? I have about 30 pounds to lose.
Thanks for your help!
Denise
Denise, welcome to JOJ and congrats on starting your juice fast next Monday! As far as what to do after your fast, read this article I wrote: http://www.justonjuice.com/how-to-eat-after-a-fast/ It will answer all your questions. If you’re feeling good and want to continue with your fast then do so. If you go over 30 days it may be good to consult with your doctor to decide if it’s best to continue. I wish you all the best Denise. Keep me posted on your success! Cheers!
Is a juicer and a juice extractor the same thing? I’m at the store right now…help! Lol
Sorry for the late response Angel. I’m sure you’ve already made your purchase but I’ll answer it anyway. A juice extractor will pull out the juice and leave behind the fiber. Sometimes a juice extractor is referred to as the old style orange juice squeezers though. So make sure you are getting a juicer that works out best for your needs.
Hi Donnie,
Great to come across your website – very informative and helpful. I am on Day3 of juicing and doing just fine. Infact feeling all the more fresh. I read through all the posts on the website and got lot of information. I have a few questions though.
1. Can I have 2 spoons of wheatgrass powder a day in my juice , not sure as it has fiber?
2. Can I carry home made veg juice to office and have it in the 8 hrs I am there
3. I am aiming to reduce 20 Kgs but that may take 60 days juicing – do you think I can do this in breaks and see beneficial results as when done in a stretch
Thanks so much for your time
Ritu, I’m sorry for the late response. I took some time to spend with family this Holiday season.
You should stay away from anything with fiber as it will slow down your juice fast.
Yes, you can make your juices and take them to work with you. Just keep them in an airtight container and store them in the refrigerator. They will keep for 8-10 hours.
While you can do it in breaks, it will be harder for you to go back to juicing after you include solids back into your diet. Plus, once you start seeing the results I don’t think you’ll want to stop!
I wish you all the best Ritu, I’m always here if you have questions. Keep me posted on your success!
I just started my first juice fast, I’m on day 2. I was wondering if you can drink kombucha tea and water kefir when on juice fast. Also, can you take spirulina and fish oil?
Thank you
Yvette, tea is fine but leave out the water kefir while juice fasting. Spirulina is fine but no oils. Congrats on starting your juice fast. I’m here if you have any questions.
Hello:
I was wondering if water is the only thing I can drink while on the 7-day-juice-plan? I drink a lot of green tea or herb tea and just wondered if I can drink that as well as plenty of water?
Thanks, Tonya
Tonya, you can drink tea also. Just be careful as some teas such as your greens and blacks have a high amount of caffeine. You should limit you caffeine intake or at best you should avoid caffeine altogether. Enjoy!
Hi. Can i go to the gym and do cardio or weightlifting if im on the juice fast? Thank you (:
Thea, it’s best to let your body rest and recover during the first 3-5 days of your juice fast or until you’ve gone through detox. After that it’s fine to start doing cardio or weightlifting. Just make sure you are including plenty of protein greens such as spinach or kale into your juices.
Hi do you recommend using a viitamix for juicing?
Sorry Ashley, a vitamix is not a juicer, it is a blender. You must use a juicer while on the juice fast.
Hello I am considering a juice fast and was wondering if you had any good pointers for me. I am doing it to lose weight. That’s probably obvious but I would like to lose about 20lbs. I could stand to lose 30 but 20 would leave me feeling much better. I’m nervous about starting and I’m not really sure where to start. I’ve taken a look at hour tips and shopping lists. I guess I am wondering if there is a certain way I should prepare myself or is it okay to just jump right in? I don’t want to hurt my body. Thanks for any input.
Heather, there are so many resources to help you get started on the site and on the forum. Browse around and read everything so you are fully confident when you start your fast! Start here: http://www.justonjuice.com/how-to-juice-fast/ and then take a look at the 7 day juice fast plan here: http://www.justonjuice.com/7-day-juice-fast-plan That should be good to get you started. You can jump right in but sometimes it’s better to start out by eating nothing but fresh fruits and vegetables the few days before your juice fast. This will help prepare your body for the juice.
Hi! i want to start the juice fast, but I was wondering if I can drink the juice a few hours after I made it, for example making my lunch juice in the morning before I go to work and drinking it at my lunch break, is this ok to do? I can’t wait to start juicing!
thanks!
I’m no expert at juicing but I have done months of research on what juicer to buy. If you have a centirfugal juicer (the ones that spin 1600+ RPMs) the juice is typically good for up to 24 hours when stored in the fridge. If you use a masticating juicer such as the one I bought, Omega 8006, the juice last for up to 72 hours. But beware, masticating juicers are way more expensive than a typical centifugal juicer. I hope that helped answer your question. Happy juicing!
Brad
BZ, I tend to say it’s best to have your juices within 12 hours if your using a centrifugal juicer. Out of the 4 I’ve used that’s typically when they start to deteriorate to a point where the taste is affected. While I’m sure you can keep them up to 24 hours it’s always best to have them as soon as possible. Or you could just get a masticating one like you have and not worry about it Thanks for the comment BZ!
After juicing for over a month I’m going to attempt to fast the next 4 days. I’m not sure if I’m going to make it without food. At least I’ve been juicing and got rid of feeling like crap over a month ago. I’ve been eating mostly whole foods so I’m sure I’ll feel much better than the last time I attempted to fast. I tried fasting for 3 days but each day I felt horrible and broke my fast at 5 pm. It’s 5 am and I’m already thinking of food. LOL I’ve felt great from juicing so my question is will I notice any benefits from fasting besides weight loss? Last time I attempted fasting I lost 5 pounds in 3 days.
Hi, I was wondering if I could have cereal in the morning for breakfast to break my 5 or 3-days juice fast?
Michelle, just stick to fresh fruits and veggies when coming off the fast.
Donnie: I juice daily and do fasting couple of times a year. I have been juicing for a long time. I drink 8 oz of carrot with apple 3 times a day everyday. I make the juice on Sunday and Wednesdays. It is a lot of work to do it daily. I was told and find that it is true that I put the juice in 8 oz Mason jars all the way to the top and put a plastic screw on top. That way there is no oxygen that is getting to it so it will last for 3 days in the refrigerator. After 3 days you can notice how it starts to break down and you will not want to drink it. I have been on the Hallelujah Lifestyle (hacres.com) for quite some time. You feel like you could run around the block many times. :0)
That’s good to hear Sherri. I’m glad juicing is making your life better. I’ve experimented with how long the juices last and I’ve found that even though after a day the juice may taste good, it doesn’t provide the same benefits as it does when it’s had fresh. Keep on juicing Sherri!
My husband and I will be doing our first juice fast soon. I have two questions.
1-How can I avoid the crippling caffiene withdrawal headaches?
2-My husband will have to carry his juices to work with him. How much will this affect the freshness?
Thanks!
Mary, congrats on starting your juice fast soon. As far as caffeine, you can take tylenol or ibuprofen for your headaches. That should help with a lot. The juices will last throughout the day as long as they are stored in airtight containers and kept in a refrigerator. If he can’t keep them in a refrigerator then he should keep his juices in a lunch sack packed with ice. That should keep them fresh. Let me know if you or your husband have any questions Mary.
So I decided to start a juice fast.
I was going to start on Friday, but the juicer has arrived and so last night I went shopping thinking there is no time like the present. I bought a few ingredients just to try it out and thought that I would still properly start on Friday. Made myself an amazingly tasty juice.
I usually wake hungry, but this morning all I wanted was a juice. My stomach feels slightly weird, but I’m sure that will pass. Really looking forwards to seeing how long I can last.
Congrats on starting your juice fast Sianny! Keep me posted on your success and know that I’m here if you have any questions.
I just started a juice fast today… so far so good but I do have a question: I have an underactive thyroid and I read somewhere else not to juice certain veggies with this condition such as spinach, kale, broccoli and a few others I cannot recall… So I seem to making juices that are on the sweeter side: carrot, apple, orange, cucumber, golden beet, ginger & lemon for example. I am afraid this might be too much sugar. Any suggestions how to substitute for those greens? I have romaine and celery to use as well.
Tammylee, you’ll have to find veggies that you can juice and use those. I would consult with a nutritionist or a doctor to see what your best options are for an under active Thyroid. Keep me posted Tammylee.
Hey there
I have been losing a lot of weight over the past year but sort of hit a plateau that I can’t seem to overcome. I’m thinking about doing a 7 day juice fast to detox my body. I work out a lot (at least 1 hour every day) and was wondering if my body was still going to get everything it needs with juicing or if I should not workout while I fast? Also when I come off the fast I know I am going to eat mostly fruits and veggies before introducing other solid food back into my system but what about after that? Is all you eat veggies and fruits with some protein once in a while? I was thinking about permanently substituting one meal per day with a juice, does that seem like a good idea?
Thanks
Hannah
Hannah, welcome to JOJ. Your body will get everything it needs but you may consider slowing down your workouts while on the fast as your body will need the rest and recovery time.
Read this article on how to come off a fast and how to eat afterwards: http://www.justonjuice.com/how-to-eat-after-a-fast/
After you come off your fast it’s ideal to include a juice or two as a meal replacement or in addition to your meals. This helps to ensure you’re getting all the nutrition that you need. Let me know if you have any more questions Hannah.
Hi Donnie- I am gearing up for my first fast and am wondering if it would be counterproductive to add a bit of protein powder to my juices? I have found on past diets that if I am low on protein I get very uncomfortable.
Claire, it’s fine to add an unflavored protein isolate to your juices if you have a very active lifestyle or work out consistently.
Is it ok to work out while i fast?
Sofia, it’s fine to work out but make sure you listen to your body. When it’s had enough, don’t push your self. Your body needs as much rest to recover from the detox. Let me know if you have any questions.
Is a nutribullet good to use
No Kelly, a nutribullet is not a juicer, it’s a blender so you can’t use it to juice fast. Read this article for more information: http://www.justonjuice.com/can-i-use-a-blender-for-juicing/
Let me know if you have any questions.
Hi, I have been reading A LOT about the juicing. My husband and I have been going organic with all of our food and now I am wanting to start juicing. I am a nurse and have to work anywhere from 12 to 16 hours. What do you recommend I do to so I can have my juice at work? Are the commercial juices okay such as the “NAKED” brand to take to work?
Tammy, make your juices in the morning and store them in airtight containers. Put them in the fridge when you get to work and they should last throughout the day for you. As far as brands like Naked Juice stay away from those unless it’s an emergency. Let me know if you have any questions.
Started the 7 day juice plan and have not lost any weight. This is day 4! I’m following it correctly, any suggestions??
Annie, if you are following everything correctly, using a juicer, and not consuming any solids, it’s just about impossible for you not to lose weight after 4 days.
Break down your day for me as far as what recipes you are using, what juicer you are using, and what else you consume throughout the day including water. We will figure it out.
Hi
I am loving your site. I am starting the 7 day program today. I read some of your FAQ and. can I make 2 days of the juices a head of time?. I work a crazy schedule . But after reading some of the other questions. It was mentioned not to store the juice for more than 10 hours.
Diane, I wouldn’t make juices that far ahead of time. Anything over 10-12 hours is really pushing it. Do your best to make them in the morning and bring them with you. This way they will still be very beneficial to you. I wish you the best of luck! I’m here if you have any questions.
Is there any good juicing recipes? I am having difficulties drinking the recipes on this site.
Hi, I live in Cameroon and am not able to always get fresh vegetables. Am I able to use frozen spinach to juice?
Heidi, you can use frozen produce but make sure it’s 100% thawed before you attempt to juice it. Keep me posted and let me know how things go for you. I’m here if you have any questions.
Hi Donnie! I did a 5 day juice fast and wasn’t able to keep any of the weight loss off once transitioning to solids. Is there a trick to keeping the weight off?
Rebecca, if you go back to your previous eating habits the weight will come right back. How much did you lose during those 5 days? Did you read through the guide on how to eat after a fast? http://www.justonjuice.com/how-to-eat-after-a-fast/ Keep me posted and let me know if you have any questions.
Can you pre make a couple days worth of juice?
Ashley, it’s best to drink your juices as soon as you can after making them so they don’t lose any nutritional value. If you have to make them ahead of time, make them in the morning and take them with you. It helps to prepare the ingredients the night before and store them in gallon size freezer bags. This way you just have to pull out your bags, juice them, and you’re done. They should keep throughout the day. But I wouldn’t keep them any longer than 8-10 hours at most. Let me know if you have any questions.
Today I’m wrapping up my day one! I saw a few things in this article just now that I just naturally picked up on and did to day. For example, I got really angry but I just had another drink and that hungry went away. One of the things that shocked me was the blender/juicer thing, I have a blender if I can make it through a week I will most diffinitely invest in a juicer but for now (hope I still lose some weight). Last thing I think was the portion size, I think I have 60% fruit and 40% veggies…but I’ll change that starting tomorrow. Anyhoo, great post thanks!
Here goes. Day one of my 7 day juice fast. I could drink 6 gallons of this a day I think. I’m a bit of a bottomless pit when it comes to eating. Any words of wisdom to help shift my thoughts? I’m detoxing and fasting…not satisfying hunger…ahhhh *repeat*
Kate, congrats on day 7! Hunger should be satisfied, and most likely you are confusing the hunger with cravings. Hunger is how your body tells you it needs nutrients, and cravings are when your mind is telling you to eat out of habit, boredom, or for the taste and pleasure of it. You’re doing great Kate, just keep doing what you’re doing! I’m here if you have questions.
I’m about to start a 7 day juicing, I was wondering if it was okay to eat protein, meat, fish, chicken during the 7 days. would that make a too much of a difference. replace 2 meals a day with juice and one solid meal just veggies and meat.
Gaby, if you’re goal is to lose weight then eating solids is out of the question while on the juice fast. The juice fast works by resting your digestive system while consuming only juice that gets absorbed into your system. Let me know if you have any questions.
Hi , I am starting the juicing fast process today and just came across your website. It is proving to be a great tool by the way, thank you for that. I have heard in the past to start a juice fast you need to eat fruits and vegetables only for three days beforehand. Do you agree with this, or is it safe to just jump right into the fast? Does all of the waist from previous meals before juicing just sit in your intestines while the fast is happening because there is no fiber to move everything along? I know this is kind of a gross question but necessary all the same. Do I need to clean out my bowels before the fast? I did a juice fast for 40 days a year ago and am definately needing another one, I took fiber and physillium husks while fasting the first week to cleanse the colon as well. Is this necessary?
Jessica, while it is best to ease into a fast by eating raw fruits and vegetables beforehand, it’s also okay to just jump right in. I’ve done both and my results weren’t affected either way.
You’re waste will pass through your intestines just fine without any more fiber. Remember, anything you ate had fiber in it so it will clump up and move out. The juice will help in passing it out your system and hydrating your digestive system. There’s no need for any thing else but the juice. You have to remember that it’s important to not have any solids (including any fiber) as it will interfere with your juice fast. The fast works by allowing your digestive system to rest and cleanse. It can’t do that when you are giving it stuff to digest. So remember to keep your fast strictly juices and nothing else.
You’re going to do great Jessica! Keep me updated on how things work out and remember that I’m always here if you have any questions.
Hi Donnie,
Day 14 today – last time I wrote I was about to give up entirely but I am glad I didn’t. I am now feeling less tired, my blood pressure readings without my meds are showing normal, my weight loss very slow – 4 Kilos or 9lb but have lost 4cm around the waist. My face is not puffy anymore. Had an eye test the other day and the pressure in my eyes has gone down from 20 to 12, I will have a blood test for cholesterol level and thyroid level at the end of the month. I am delighted with all that but highly disappointed that my spots and itching are still driving me mad. Hives were the main reason for the juice fast.
The last couple of days I have been having juices during the day but a small salad with lemon juice at night. I also followed your suggestion of using more lemon juice but had to ease back a bit because of heartburn.
Can you offer any other suggestions as to why the hives are not be responding to the fast. I would be interested to know what kind of response any of your readers have had with this particular problem.
Once again thank you for your time in helping me through this – please know that it is greatly appreciated.
Stacey
That’s fantastic Stacey! It’s great that you are seeing the health benefits of it. As far as the itching I suggest you try adding some turmeric powder into a few of your juices daily. It might help it might not, but it’s worth a shot. Keep me posted.
Wow, Stacey, you’re an inspiration to me! I have one suggestion about the itiching…try going through your home and getting rid of all the toxins. Laundry soap is a big cause of itching and rashes. Switch to natural, non-toxic cleaners, soaps, lotions, etc.
Good luck to you!
Vicki
Good idea Vicki!
Hai, I am a Malaysian. I am planning to start juicing. But near my place, veg such as kale, beet is not available. What kind of Asian veg that I can use to replace these veg?
Tammy, please take a look at the substitution list found here: http://www.justonjuice.com/juicing-substitution-list/
I’m sure you will find plenty of suitable replacements. If you still have questions, just let me know. Enjoy!
Hi Donnie, thank you for the guide and tips on juice fasting. Today is day 4 and I’m down 13 lbs. Really determined to make it all the way to at least 7 days. Unfortunately I have no power at home and unable to juice today. Do you have any suggestions for a temporary replacement juice that can be purchased at the store?
Matt, you are very welcome! Congrats on 4 days and 13 pounds! That’s wonderful Matt! If you have to, and only in a pinch, grab a store bottled juice like a naked juice. Your best bet would be to look for a juice bar. I know some smoothie places offer fresh juice too. Hope your power gets back on soon!
Also, I finished my first drink by 1030. It is now 2:20 and im still not that hungry, is that normal? Should i force myself to drink my lunch?
The best thing you can do is to listen to your body. If it’s not hungry, don’t have a juice. If it’s telling you to eat, have a juice. Don’t try to force anything. You’re body will tell you when it’s time to have another juice.
I just started the 14 day juice cleanse today. I have a bit of a headache but i am determined.
Rasalina, if you were a big caffeine consumer that is to be expected. Even if you weren’t headaches are common during the detox phase. They will pass and it’s okay if you want to take a tylenol or ibuprofen. Congrats on starting your fast! I’m always here if you have questions.
Mu husband and I are first time “juicers” We are getting ready for the 7 day cleanse. How much weight should we expect to lose? And is de-caf tea acceptable?
Linda, congrats on making the decision to do a juice fast. I’ve seen people lose anywhere from 5-15 pounds or more during their first week. It really depends on how much you have to start with and how well you stick to your juices. De-caf tea is fine while on the fast. Keep me posted Linda. I’m here if you have questions.
Almost the end of day nine. Feeling absolutely dejected – today has been a bad day and I am struggling. I am scratching my skin like crazy and thought that by now my hives would have been under control or at least settling. This is making me mad and I feel like heading into the kitchen and cooking a steak that I can sink my teeth into! I was looking forward to doing the fast for at least 15 days but I will go for ONE MORE DAY – at least I have seen some weight loss – but I would trade that in a heartbeat for the itching!
Stacey, years of eating habits will take some time to filter out through your body. I assure you heading in to the kitchen and eating something won’t change that. I want you to try including more lemons in your juices and drink lemon water throughout the day to see if that makes a difference. Lemon has a natural anti-inflammatory that will help with the itching. Keep me posted.
Hi, when doing the juice fast is it ok to drink sparkling water or does it have to be still. Thank you
Sparkling water is okay to consume during the fast Michelle.
Thank you so much for your prompt reply. I am using a cold press juicer and ideally I would like to lose 16-20 lb. I will stop with the potato at night. I am now using various juices one of which includes sweet potato and another that includes avacado – is that ok? Can you suggest any particular ones or should I just stick to the ones on the 7 day fast only? Also should I be experiencing heartburn – especially with juices containing ginger.
Thanking you again for your dedication and taking the time to guide all of us through our juicing phases.
Stacey
Sweet potato and avocado are perfectly fine to juice. Ginger may give you heartburn, it it does just use less of it. Feel free to use any juice recipes you like on your fast. http://www.justonjuice.com/juicing-recipes/
Keep me posted Stacey.
I am a 57 year old female. I decided to do the juice fast (on day 7) in the hope that I can lower my cholesterol, high blood pressure, severe heartburn, annoying itching symptoms which may or may not be, pin size like hives and to drop some weight, I also have a Thyroid problem and take Thyroxine. I have lost about 4lbs so far. I struggle to drink the required amount of water and feel sick when I try and force it down. I have had no ill effects on the fast, but at the same time apart from the weight loss have not had any good effects either.
I have been on the doctor merry-go-round for over a year so hoping that this will give my body time to heal. Benefits I am looking for are good sleep and no more itching with more energy and improvement in memory – I am sick of this brain fog! Weight loss will be a bonus as the weight has crept on over the years.
When should I start to expect results especially with this maddening itch.
After reading one of the posts below I now realise that I may have ruined my efforts as I have been having 1/2 mashed baked sweet potato of a night time to ease my head hunger!
Any feed back would be appreciated and thank you for your amazing site.
Stacey, welcome to JOJ and congrats on starting your fast. You need to stop including a sweet potato in your diet while on the fast. The fast works by allowing your digestive system to rest and when you add solids to the mix it start it back up. If you’re hungry, have a juice. The juice will work wonders for you if you let it. Also, what type of juicer are you using and how much weight do you have to lose? We can correct this but you’ll have to stop with the sweet potato at night. It’s only counter active to your fast. Keep me posted and we will work together to get you on track and feeling fabulous!
Hi there
I started juicing a week ago,a friend suggested it, just been having one for breakfast, and feel so much better (have also ditched the meat and bread etc), however, I’ve just found your site and am so excited I’m going to do a 7 day juice fast to start and see how it goes, My aim is to stop feeling so shit all the time, I am fed up with the headaches, high blood pressure, tiredness and inability to lose weight.
wish me luck, I’ll let you know how it goes. Jx
That’s awesome Jill! Welcome to JOJ and congrats on stepping it up to a full 7 day fast! You’re going to feel fabulous after your fast Jill. Keep me posted on your status and know that I’m always here if you have any questions.
I had a great 5 days… I lost 10.8 pounds. Nothing ever worked before this. I will admit though that I got lazy over the last few days and didn’t do as I should. I’m going to get back on the juicing today. My goal is to do a shortened 3 day juice fast then go back to my original plan of replacing two meals a day w/ juicing. Do you think this is a good plan? Thanks again for the great site.
Bryan, congrats on 5 days and nearly 11 pounds lost!!! I think your plan will work out great and you’ll still see weight loss. Keep us all posted Bryan! Congrats again!
Hello Donnie!
I’m contemplating starting a 7-day juice fast. However,I have one huge obstacle. I don’t have or can afford (as of today) a juicer. I have a blender that has a strainer attached to it. But your #5 tips advises against blenders all together. Any advice on a good – affordable – juicer to get me started?
Thanks again for this blog and being dedicated. I wanted to make sure you actually responded to your reader before sending in a question, and I can see that you’re on it! Telling me that you take this seriously. Glad I came across your blog.
CiCi, welcome to JOJ and thanks for your comment. Amazon has the Hamilton Beach right now for $49.98! It’s a super good deal. I used the Hamilton Beach when I first started and it is a great juicer! I suggest you take a look at it here
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002OF3FBK/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B002OF3FBK&linkCode=as2&tag=jus033-20
If you click on the “refurbished” link, you should be able to get it for around $32 and $10 for shipping if you don’t mind it being refurbished. It has everything you need in juicer. I hope you can get it and get started! Keep me posted. I’m always here if you have any questions.
Donnie,
I just wanted to thank you again for addressing my concerns about fasting last week. I would like to share with you that I am on day 6 of my 10 day fast going strong! I lost 13 pounds so far!!!!! What do I need to do to ensure that I continue to loose weight after I complete my fast?
Thank you so much for helping me through this process!
Tera
Tera, you’re most welcome! Congrats on day 6 and 13 pounds lost so far! That’s incredible! To ensure you continue to lose weight and keep it off after the fast just read this article. http://www.justonjuice.com/how-to-eat-after-a-fast/
It has everything you need to know in it.
Thrilled to come across this website after watching another popular dvd. I was doing the green smoothies and i loved them however i really looking forward to doing the juice fast. Starting tomorrow I’m hoping for the loss of small patches of psorisis on my elbows and to lose some excess weight. Thanks so much for all the great information!
Kylie, welcome to JOJ. I’m sure after you’ve juiced for a while you’ll notice those patches will probably start to fade. Congrats on making the decision to go on a juice fast! It will do wonders for you! I’m here if you have any questions.
Hello I was wondering if you can exercise while juice fasting?
Michelle, you can exercise while juicing but keep it to a minimum during the first few days. You’re body needs to rest and relax during the detox phase. After you’ve gone through detox feel free to exercise all you want. You’ll probably have more than enough energy to do so. Enjoy!
Hi Donnie,
Thank you for taking the time putting this wealth of information together and sharing your knowledge. Your site is great! I’m on day four of my fast and am feeling great. I cut out coffee the week before I started the juice fast and had headaches and bodyaches and such but am now feeling much better. You’re right..the first three days are the toughest. I do have a question. Is there any need to add salt do a juicing diet?
Meredith, welcome to JOJ. Congrats on day 4! You don’t want to add salt to your fast. If it’s salt you are craving, celery has a natural salty taste so you may consider adding more celery to your juices. I’ll be here if you have any questions.
So what are some tips on saving money because as a college student I have a budget to keep. Also I want to lose my gut and get my muscles that I already have from being an athlete to be shown. Do you have specific category of recipes for weight lost?
Lola, make sure to check all of your markets for the price ads. See which ones are having sales and also see if any of them price match. You may want to see if there are any farmers markets in your area. Sometimes you can get really good deals. There’s not one individual recipe that will make you lose weight. It’s about juicing long enough for it to make a difference in your body. One rule to stick to if you want to lose weight is to keep your juices 80% veggie and 20% fruit. That will greatly help you reach your weight goals.
Hello Donnie,
First, let me say, I love your site. I just came across it today while on my lunch hour. I can’t wait to get home so I can really dive into your site.
I am not sure if you have an article on this. I started my juice journey last Monday with the goal that I would juice throughout the day and eat one solid meal-for 30 days. My meal is always a salad (romaine lettuce, spinach, red onion, bell peppers, a pinch of shredded cheese, cucumber and about tablespoons of dressing). I typically have at least 40 ounces of juice and 96 ounces of water, and then my meal. I have now decided to do strictly juice.
I have always been regular, but since I began my juicing journey, I am not regular anymore (for the most part, not at all). Do you have an article on your site on this subject. I would love to be regular again. Another person I have following talks about Colonics, natural laxatives or enemas. Your thoughts on this?
Thank you,
Valarie
Valarie, thank you! I’m so glad you love the site and found it helpful. As far as being regular I’m going to assume you are talking about the lack of bowel movements. Juicing will affect your bowel movements due to the fact you aren’t consuming any solids. It’s merely a lack of waste in your system, and not enough waste to warrant a bowel movement. See, your juices are absorbed into your body and do not go through the digestive process. But since you do have a light salad you should have some waste every now and then. I typically see no need for any type of laxatives while on the fast as the juice does a pretty good job of that itself. If you fear you are constipated try some natural laxatives. Give it a shot and try it out. It won’t hurt your fast. I’m here if you have any questions Valarie.
Hi Donnie,
Thank you so much for your response.
Being that I wanted to juice for 30 days (I started on the 22), I think I am going to complete my last two weeks by following your 14 day juice fast(which means no solids for me).
I really enjoy your site and plan on going through a another round of juicing.
Thanks!
Valarie, that’s fantastic. I wish you the best of luck on your fast! Keep me posted please.
Every time I start a juice fast I get diahreea real bad (have to wear a pad on my bottom) & a flu like sickness, so I generally stop the juices & take Imodium and/or fiber. I eat lots of veggies & whole foods normally, very little meat, fish & eggs, but no dairy. Please help! Do I need to stay home for a week to juice & stay by the toilet? How long can this go on before getting the benefits?
Hi Susie,
I am not trying to turn this into a TMI conversation, but I wish I could go. With me, nothing is coming out(whereas, I used to be regular) :<(
Valarie, just keep in mind that juices are absorbed and not digested. Any waste that comes out was there from your previous meals. Once you’ve been on the fast for a few days there’s nothing left in your system to warrant a bowel movement. A lot of people mistake that with constipation. It’s not constipation if you are on a juice fast.
Susie, you aren’t getting diarrhea. It’s your system getting hydrated and cleansed. Since the juice fast eliminates fiber that is to be expected sometimes. If you have a lot of build up and toxins, they have to come out somehow. You may also be having a reaction to one of the ingredients. Start by juicing only fresh fruits and veggies that you normally consume.
You start getting the benefits on your first juice. It will clean you out and flush your system while loading you up on nutrients. So try juicing only fruits and veggies that you eat on a regular basis and do your best to relax. Don’t put any additional stresses on your body. I’m here if you have any questions.
Hi. I have decided to try a 1 week juice fast but I have to take a fibre supplement in the form of a sachet mixed with water every mornings. Am I ok to continue to take it?
Thanks
Jason, welcome to JOJ and congrats on deciding to do a juice fast! Is the fiber supplement doctor prescribed? The reason I ask is that when you go on a juice fast you are eliminating insoluble fiber from your diet. Since juice is absorbed and not digested the fiber has nothing to clump up and serves no purpose. It’s best to let the juices do their magic without any interference. If what you are taking is prescribed, then I suggest you talk with your doctor and let him/her know what you are planning to do. Your Doc might have some better input for you as he/she knows your conditions.
Also, thanks again for the great blog. The directions are easy to follow. I’ve lost 6 pounds in two days. This has been such a big help.
Congrats on 6 pounds! That’s really great Bryan! Keep me posted on your status.
I’m on day 3 now and this is great. I have a soccer team family picnic Friday. It’s a carry in, what would happen if I ate regular solid food at this event? If it’s going to have an adverse effect I won’t go. My plan was to do the 7 day fast then replace two meals a day w/ juicing.
Thanks!
Bryan, if you eat anything solid it will take you out of your fast. Since you’re on day 3 you are just now getting over the hard part. You can still go, just don’t eat. Bring a juice or two with you.
I Love your blog! You are very knowledgeable. I am doing a 10 day fast with a group of friends from church. This is day one and I must say that it went fairly well. I experienced light dizziness a few times but I know that is the norm. I’ve heard that day 2 or 3 is the hardest. Is this true???
Well thank you Tera-Aileen! Congrats on starting your 10 day fast! Day 2 and 3 can be harder than the first day but sometimes it’s not. Just keep a strong mind and look towards your goal. Those days will fly by really fast! The first few days are often harder for people with caffeine addictions. But you can take tylenol or ibuprofen for the headaches. Keep me posted on your fast. I’m here if you have any questions.
Thank you so much!
You are very welcome!
After a few days reading and finally coming to this blog. I decided to take on a 30 day juicing today :). My main reason for this is getting healthier. And getting rid of the horrid water retention that seems to be around during summer time, although I drink lots of water and no sweet sodas. Thank you for the well explained facts around this adventure :). Hope all will go well
IR, thanks for your comment on congrats on deciding to do a juice fast! It will be a great change for your body! I’m here if you have any questions!
I have gained considerable weight because of medication I have to take. Recently I’ve been having severe back problems from the neck down an after tons of doc appts., MRI’s, etc. noone seems to be able to pinpoint the problem. Hence I am wanting to start a Juice Fast out of desperation. My question is…will this help with weight gained because of meds? Hopefully it will also help with my pain too. Sick of taking pills that don’t work and don’t I want to take in the first place!
Jodi, welcome to JOJ and thanks for your comment. Juicing can make a huge difference with your health and health related issues. It’s truly amazing what your body can achieve when it’s given the proper nutrition to do it. As far as your medications you should get in contact with your doctor and see if any meds should be adjusted while on your fast. I wouldn’t quit taking any meds that were prescribed until your doctor tells you to. Schedule regular checkups and keep your doctor informed. You’ll do great Jodi! I’m here if you have any questions.
Hello, I read your website and am ready to jump on the band wagon. My goal is to lose 50 pounds. I did the HCG unsuccessfully and each time I lost the weight but gained it back plus 10-12 pounds.
I believe this will be healthier for me. I am going to have my son do it with me. My goal is to do it exactly as you say. My son however, who is 19 years old will have at least one meal per day.
I’m about to go to the grocery store now with the list you provided.
QUESTION: What suggestion do you have for someone such as myself who work 8 to 5 in a office environment? If I prepare the juices in the morning and take them to work, will they still be just as fresh or will it seperate and look oooky?
Carolyn, welcome to JOJ! Juicing will be a very healthy option for you and you’ll be amazed at the results. If your sons goal is to lose weight then having a meal a day won’t help him while he’s on the fast. No solids while on the fast.
As for work it’s perfectly fine to make your juices in the morning and bring them to work with you. I did that for the first 2 weeks in my fast. Just store them in a thermos, keep them in the fridge, and shake them up good before you drink them. They should hold out just fine. You’re going to do great Carolyn. I’m here if you or your son have any questions.
This was so informative, easy to understand, and answered so many questions I had about juicing, such as what kind of juices to make, and why use a juicer instead of blender. Thank you very much, I look forward to starting my juice fast and sharing this healthy life style with my friends and family.
Tim, I’m glad you found all the answers you were looking for. It’s going to be exciting once you start! I’m here if you have any questions.
Donni,
I had a couple of question regarding this juice fast (which by the way I have already started). I am doing a 14 day juice fast and was wonderins, is there any negative impact this could have on my muscles or bones? And how much protein intake do I need to make sure that I am getting the proper nutrition my body needs ( is the protein in spinach enough)?
Tim, you shouldn’t experience any negative issues with your muscles or bones. You’ll get an adequate intake of protein. Besides spinach there are plenty of other things that will provide you with protein. If you lift weight you may want to include a protein supplement such as an unflavored protein isolate. But if you don’t lift weights every day and aren’t trying to build muscle it’s unnecessary. I’m here if you have questions.
Donni,
I am on day 10 of my juice fast and after 7 days I had lost 14 pound!(which I am super pumped about). I still feel really good and not have not felt hungry at all but food sure does smell super good.
I had another couple of questions my wife just had a baby and she is currently breat feeding. When, if ever would it be ok for her to start a juice fast? After she is done breast feeding? And the second question is would it be ok for me to any kind of cardio right now like running or riding a bike for 30 or 45 minutes a day?
Thank you for all you answers to my questions they have really helped out.
Tim, congrats on 7 days and 14 pounds! That’s a great achievement at this point in your fast.
You’re wife should wait until she’s finished nursing before going on her own juice fast.
Feel free to start exercising but don’t overdue it. Listen to your body. I’m here if you have any questions.
Donnie,
Just thought I would keep you posted on my juice fast. It has been 19 days on my fast and I have lost 23 lbs. ! I am super happy with the results thus far. I have not had time because of work to do any serious working out but I plan to start next week. Once again thanks for all the help.
Thanks,
Tim G.
Tim, congrats on 19 days and 23 pounds lost! That’s really incredible! I bet you feel really amazing and very proud of yourself. You did great. I’m always here if you have questions.
hello,
been reading a lot of post here in JOJ, lot of information.
been thinking of doing this (juicing) for a while now, but didn’t really do anything about it, but now i think i am ready to do it, i already ordered my juicer (Breville – JE98XL), i cant wait to start juicing.
i know im going to have a lot of questions, i am glad that i found this site.
lloyd
Lloyd, congrats on ordering your juicer and deciding to do your juice fast. It will be very rewarding! I’m always here if you have questions so feel free to ask.
I’ve read your blog and am starting 14 day juicing fast tomorrow. Interested in any advice. I have a vitamix. Can I use that or do I need to use my juicer?
Thanks in advance
Alan
Alan, thank you for your comment. You’ll need a juicer to juice. Blenders don’t break down the juices or remove the pulp and fibers. Read this article for a complete understanding of why you must use a juicer on a juice fast:
http://www.justonjuice.com/can-i-use-a-blender-for-juicing/
I’m here if you have any questions Alan.
Hi, What is your documentary called? I am going to buy my first juicer and begin my first cleanse!
Hi Rachael, congrats on planning out your juice fast! Let me know if you have any questions. Also, I don’t have a documentary. Maybe sometime in the future.
Many thanks for this site, I’m new to juicing so it is an invaluable tool to me. I have been having green smoothies for past week, two per day with a light evening meal with no carbs. I have two questions would I lose weight if I did the juices twice per day and light meal later. I’m a support worker in the community and work fourteen hour shifts at the weekend so I dare not start the juice fast until Monday. Will the juices give me enough energy to get through my shifts or should I stick to smoothies until I have completed shifts. I feel as though I have kinda gone through a semi detox already. However I must add , having just juices would give me lots more nutrients then I normally have when eating as I get few breaks and found myself just grabbing the odd biscuit and crisps here and there. Many thanks again for your fab site
Laura, you’ll get a lot of energy from the juices. Working your schedule I would juice and if it gets to be too much, add a light meal or a smoothie. Try this out a few times until you can go straight juice. After you’ve gone through detox the juice will give you plenty of energy to do your shifts. I’m always here if you have questions Laura.
Hi,
I would be starting my weight loss with just juicing tomorrow.
I need to reduce 50Lbs. Any idea how long will it take. And can I continue doing it till I achieve my target weight.
BTW it was a helpful blog !!!!
Indrani, thanks for your comment. I’m not sure how long it would take but I would say based on averages maybe 2 months or less. It really depends on how much you start with, how many juices you drink and how well you stick to it. If you keep juicing you will lose that 50 pounds Indrani. Just stick with it, the weight will come off. I’m glad you find JOJ helpful! I’m here if you have questions.
hi, im interested in doing the 7 day diet,i am currently 7 months an wanting an energy boost, i know a lot about nutrition an know the benefits, my question is tho, would you recommend the diet for pregnant people and also could we have homemade soups, as it still is a liquid?
Daisy, I wouldn’t recommend that you fast while pregnant due to the fact that toxins are released into your bloodstream. It’s best to ask your doctors opinion on the topic. Soups are fine as long as they are made of stuff you juiced and warmed up. Stay away from soups out of cans or boxes, or soups that include anything other than raw vegetables and fruits. I’m here if you have any questions.
Hello! My husband and I just ordered our juicer and we are anxious to start our 14 day fast! Sadly we don’t have the any organic/homegrown produce available where we are living right now. We live 2 hours to the nearest farmers market. Will buying fruits and veggies at our local grocery store still benefit us? I guess I’m feeling that if it isn’t organic or “fresh” our outcome might be different…?
Amie, you’ll do just fine with the conventional produce at your local grocery store. Organic is great and has it’s benefits but the nutritional value of organic and conventional is the same. Just make sure you clean your produce very good before you use it. I’ll be here if you have any questions. Congrats on deciding to start your fast! You and your husband will love it!
Hi
Firstly I wish you done something like this here in the UK. I’m wanting to lose weight and especially on this juice fast diet. I think I have the will power and determination to go through with it.
Fingers crossed I can find something here in the UK.
Secondly, your website and your story has inspired me.
Thank you
Laura x
Laura, I’m working on building my UK audience and getting JOJ out there in the UK. I’m glad I was able to inspire you enough to make the decision to do your own juice fast. Follow the core advice given and you’ll do great. You can do this Laura! I’ll be here if you have any questions.
Hi, I’m contemplating starting a juice cleanse, only one thing bothers me. Is it not dangerous to elimate all the insoluable fibre from ones diet, will the colon not become lazy if it is not used regularly? I suffer from constipation a lot and I’m scared that after the cleanse my colon will suffer even more?
Laura, it’s not dangerous to eliminate insoluble fiber from your diet because you are not eating any solids. You’re colon won’t suffer at all and will most likely function even better after your fast. You’re colon wont get lazy or stop working. It will get hydrated, cleaned out, and then start to function better. The main function of fiber is to help clump up waste and pass it through your digestive system. When you are juicing, there is nothing to digest since juice gets absorbed into your system and not digested. You’ll eventually go back to eating solids and start putting those fibers back into your body. You’ll be fine Laura but if you are still concerned then it’s best you ask your doctor. Hope this helps. I’ll be here if you have any questions.
Hi. I hope you will take the time to answer this question. I work as a waitress so don’t think it’s a good idea to do the longer juice fasts just yet. So for someone who has never juice fasted before, are 1 or 2 or possibly 3 day fasts still beneficial? These are usually the total amount of days I can get off in a row. I think perhaps its best to avoid work while juice fasting at first as I cannot afford to be ill or irritable or whatever reaction I may get from fasting at work as it is working with people, lots of running up and down, etc.
Natalie, 3 day fasts are the smallest fasts I would recommend. But after 3 days you may not want to go back to solids. Being a waitress, you’ll struggle a little more with temptations and cravings but you’ll only get the full benefit of a juice fast if you make it past the detox period of 3-5 days. Shoot for 3 days, then try to make it 7 or more. After 3-5 days you’ll be surprised at how happy you are. After my first week of juicing I was laid off from work. I took it much better than I would have if I wasn’t juicing. Once you get past the detox, you’ll be surprised at all positive changes that will happen.
I have been on many juice fasting websites. your site has been very helpful. My questions is that almost all of those sites recommend drinking some type of herbal laxative tea at night to help eliminate the toxins from out body. Generally, I am the type to eat two servings of Fiber ONE ORIGINAL cereal which has 117% of my daily fiber intake on the top the fruits, veggies, and legumes I eat. Needless to say, my digestive system needs help. I am also doing the juice fast for weight loss and cleanse. What’s your opinion on the laxative tea?
Eskedar, I don’t think it’s good or bad to add a laxative tea in at the end of the night. If anything, it would be more beneficial to add a night time tea that helps you sleep. Toxins will get eliminated with or without the herbal tea if you stick to the juice fast. Another thing to consider is that generally after 3-5 days there is nothing in your system to digest. Since juice is absorbed into your system and not digested any bowel movements you have are from stuff that was in your system before you started fasting. If you stick to the juice, your body will cleanse itself and lose weight all on it’s own. I always say, it’s best to just stick to the juice and let it work. Keep me posted Eskedar, and I’ll be here if you have questions.
Hi! My mom, brother and I are beginning a 10 day juice fast tomorrow. None of us have health issues and we’re just really curious about it. My big concern is somehow not getting enough nutrients or somehow hurting myself by leaving something important out of the fast.
I guess I am just worried I don’t know what I’m doing. I have a centrifugal juicer & can’t really get any juice out of spinach (I tried). I have not attempted kale, parsley or romaine yet. What if I can’t get juice out of leafy greens? What do I do? Is there something I can use instead?
Also I have a tough time getting veggie juices to taste good, I much prefer fruit. Any advice?
Thanks so much.
Dani, it’s great that all of you are planning to do a juice fast! I understand your concerns so let me help to clear them up. When you juice, you are loading your body with nutrients in order to cleanse. You get all the nutrients you need plus plenty more. Spinach provides little juice but the little juice that it does provide is super healthy for you. Try two big handfuls instead of one. I usually get about a half shot glass or more out of the 1-2 handfuls of spinach I use. While you will get juice out of leafy greens, remember that you don’t need to be getting a huge amount to make it worth while.
The taste will grow on you, and there are a few things you can add that really help to give your juice some flavor. Lemons, Limes, Carrots, Grapes, Pomegranate seeds, and Raspberry really help to mask some of the harsher veggie flavors that you may not like. So use those to your advantage when juicing. You can also use a 1/2 lemon instead of a 1/4 lemon to give it some more tang and mask some of the veggies.
Just remember, you will get the nutrition you need including proteins. There is no need to add anything else to your juices. I’ll be here if you have any questions. Good look on your fasts, please keep me posted.
Day 4. My husband just told me I quit snoring the first day of the fast! I didn’t know I was snoring like a lumberjack! Thanks for being here.
I noticed I was sleeping much better while on the fast. Hope you got a good nights worth of sleep!
Hello! Thank you for this helpful article. I am 15 years old, and would like to lose weight before the end of the summer. The only problem is, I don’t have much willpower. Would it be ok for me to juice for dinner and breakfast, and have a salad or something similarly healthy for lunch? I think I would be able to sustain a juice fast with salads/healthy meals better than a true juice fast. Please get back to me. Thanks!
Caillean, You can have juice a few times a day along with fresh veggies and fruits. Just make sure you are eating only fresh veggies and fruits. If you start adding dairy, soda, or sweets you aren’t going to lose weight. Just focus on eating fruits and veggies along with juicing and you’ll be good. I’ll be here if you have questions Caillean.
I am on day 2. What the heck are the leg cramps about? Starting early morning, from day 1, I wake up with severe cramping and having to pee at the same time. Not a good deal.
Hope, thanks for your comment! It sounds like you are just going through detox. The cramps should go away soon. In the mean time, juice more tomatoes as they tend to help alleviate leg cramps for a lot of people. I’ll be here if you have any questions Hope.
I’m naturally very tiny, and slim (97 pounds at most). I don’t want to do the juice fast to lose weight, but to cleanse my body. Is that possible? Or will I get sickly skinny?
Also, i’m an insomniac and take sleeping pills. Will I have to stop taking them for the fast?
Thank you!
Michelle, thanks for your comment. You can do the juice fast you may consider adding some protein to your juices. I suggest a pure unflavored protein isolate like this one on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002TG3QPO/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B002TG3QPO&linkCode=as2&tag=jus033-20
You may lose a pound or two considering you’re starting at 97 pounds. As far as the sleeping pills, keep taking them if you need them. I’ll be here if you have any questions.
Hello Sir,
I am really motivated by your blog and your personable approach, thank you.
I am a 40 year old man, and 40 lbs over weight. I am pre-diabetic and do not have full flash diabetes yet.
What would you suggest as far as how many fruits should I have in my juice?
Also, can I consume tomatoes and carrots or should I limit those as well?
Thanks,
Ed
Ed, I read your forum post and commented here http://www.justonjuice.com/forum/justonjuice-forum-group1/group-juice-fasts-forum3/day-1-of-30-day-cleanse-thread78.0/#postid-1151
I’m glad you made the decision to juice fast. You won’t regret it. As far as fruits you should limit yourself to one fruit and 1/4-1/2 of a lemon. Be careful with the carrots as they have a good amount of sugar in them. Also, make sure you are including ingredients such as spinach, kale, and romaine lettuce into your juices as they contain the proteins that you will need. You can do this Ed, I’ll be here if you have any questions or just need some motivation.
Hello Donnie, I am excited to take on the juicing experience, but would like to ask you if frozen veggies and/or fruits can be juiced. For instance I tend to freeze my kale because I feel it tends to spoil quickly, what do you suggest?
Dee, you can use frozen if you like. Frozen fruits/veggies keep their nutritional value so it’s perfectly fine to freeze them. Just make sure they are thawed before you juice.
How many times a day can you drink the juice? Just 3 ? Or can u have the juice more than 3x a day?
Mayra, read tip 3 in the article.
Hi, I just started my juicing 3 days ago, is not that easy, I have headaches is that normal? so far I have lost some pounds and I’m doing the 7 days juicing, but don’t know what to do after juicing, should I go back eating as before??
Ebony, headaches are a common sign that you are going through detox. It’s perfectly normal and shows that you are getting rid of toxins. You can take tylenol or ibuprofen for your headaches if you want. As far as how to eat after a juice fast I suggest you read this article ( http://www.justonjuice.com/how-to-eat-after-a-fast/ ) as it goes into detail on how to best approach it. Don’t go back to your previous eating habits. That will just help to put it back on. I’ll be here if you have any questions.
My wife and I did the 3 day juice fast. Is it ok to keep on loosing weight by switching to a routine of juicing for breakfast and lunch then have a light dinner as a routine? I would love to hear your opinion on this.
The juice plan is awesome. Thank you for this site and putting this all together Donnie!
Marc-ee, you will most likely still lose weight if you continue to juice and add a light meal to your routine for dinner. I did that and continued to lose weight and so have many others that I know of. I wish you the best of luck! I’ll be here if you have any questions.
I use a lot of cucumbers and spinach I noticed. I have done the mean green and green giant today. I noticed ginger kind of gave me a little heart burn. But over all for the past four days I have noticed a difference. I wanted a recipe that has beets in it too try. I heard and read beets Re suppose to be really good for you. Is there any other veggie that gives you a source of protein. I thought too much spinach was not good. Just curious. Thanks Donnie
Shirley, there are plenty of veggies that give you protein. Here are a few that I use for protein: Romaine Lettuce, Spinach, Kale, Sprouts, Broccoli, Green Beans, Asparagus. The Romaine lettuce is great and adds a real earth taste to the juice if that’s something you enjoy.
Are you referring to Brussel sprouts or alfalfa sprouts? I love them both but who knew you could juice them? LOL.
Brussels sprouts is what I’m referring to. Never tried alfalfa sprouts though. I bet that would be interesting! I’ll have to for them a try! Thanks for the idea Trixie
I started juicing bc my trigliclerides and cholesterol were too high and borderline diabetic but not there thank god. I already lost 4 lbs in two days. I am going to do it for 30 days. So far I love all the juice I have been trying.
Shriley, congrats on starting your juice fast! The benefits will be amazing and you’ll be so happy you did it. I’ll be here if you have any questions. You should head over to the JOJ forums and post your fast for us to follow. It’s a great place to meet up with fellow juicers to share tips and experiences.

Hello, today is day 14 for me. I juice 3 times a day now. 4 juices was good for the first 4 to 5 days after that I was too full to drink the 4th one. As I dranked a lot of water in between and after. Each juice gives me 20 oz of juice, I fill a 32oz bottle with juice and the rest of water to the top to reduce oxygen. I am on day 14 today and Im down 20lbs. I feel great and with a lot of energy. Anything else I should be doing differently or suggest anything else?
Ricky, congrats!! You are doing fantastic! Two weeks, twenty pounds and you’re feeling good with plenty of energy. I wouldn’t change a thing. What are your goals?
Thank you so much for publishing the juice fast and the shopping list, it will make things so much easier.
I have been contemplating this fast for a while, but I have been too much of a chicken to try it.
I think I’m starting with the 3 day, and see how it goes. Wish me luck!
Pettiza, it’s only 3 days of juicing to start. You can do 3 days, I’ll be here with you to help you through it. Let me know when you’re ready, I’ll juice with you.
Many thanks for the amazing tips on how to juice fast, Donnie. I loved your tip 3. I also heard that body’s metabolic rate drops due to prolonged starvation and therefore weight loss becomes hard.
I’m on VidaThin at present. I actually use 2.5oz VidaThin lemon detox shot daily. And also never forget to drink plenty of water along with it. I get the necessary nutrients and energy from the added dietary fiber, vitamins and minerals in VidaThin. I have been advised to consume fresh fruits and continue light exercise besides its regular consumption.
Andy, thanks for the comment. A persons metabolic rate will drop with prolonged starvation making weight loss hard. Since starvation is a severe deficiency in caloric energy, nutrient, and vitamin intake, it would be impossible to starve yourself on a juice fast. How is VidaThin working working out for you? I haven’t known anyone who has tried it.
Hello,
OMG, Thanks so much for your blog! I found this right on time. I’ve been juicing for years but have never tried to do a juice cleanse. Recently I decided to take the plunge and try a five to seven day cleanse. However, in three weeks I am riding 45 miles for a fundraiser. Do you think it would be okay to cleanse while I’m training. I’m doing training rides up to 25 miles a day. Do you think it’s safe to cleanse now, or should I wait? Thanks.
Karimah, thanks for your comment and I’m glad you found JOJ! It’s possible it will be okay to do a cleanse during your training but I would suggest you wait until afterwords to do a full out cleanse. In the mean time you could do a partial cleanse with meals of fresh fruit and veggies for meals. With that heavy of a training regiment you might exhaust yourself more than usual. But also it may work to your advantage to juice since you’ve been juicing for a while. I would start by trying juicing everyday and adding a light lunch or dinner in between. This way you will better be able to tell if you can handle a full out juice fast during your training.
I wish you the best of luck on your 45 mile fundraiser. That is a great thing to be part of. Keep me posted and let me know what you decide to do and how the training goes. I’ll be here if you have any questions Karimah!
Hello, I’m going to start my 7 day juice fast tomorrow and had a question about exercising… should I change my workout routine or stick to it? I want to make sure I do it safely. Thank you for your site!
Christine, congrats on deciding to start your juice fast! As far as workouts go I would suggest you keep it light during your first three days to let your body adjust to the fast. After that feel free to continue your normal routine if you feel up to it.
If your workouts are very grueling and muscle mass is something you are trying to build I would suggest adding a pure unflavored protein isolate to your pre and after workout juices.
Hope this helps! Happy juicing!
I would like to thank you for all the great information you have listed here. For a person who is just planning on starting on a juice fast this information is really vital. I see that you recommend three juicers here http://www.justonjuice.com/juicers. Which one of these is a Masticating juicer, so i can take advantage of the wheatgrass?
Thank you for replying! So, just to be clear, to fully reap the benefits of juice fasting, all that you can consume is juice that you have juiced, right?
So no eating whole veggies or fruits that you would normally juice?
Yes Mary, to fully reap the benefits you should only consume the juice. It’s a important to make sure you aren’t digesting solids as you need to let your digestive system rest and cleanse. Hope this helps.
Hi and thanks for all the info. I’ve been wanting to do this for a very long time, but I guess just scared. This time I’m really set on starting my cleanse. Can you please tell me if there is anything you need to change in your diet prior to starting the cleanse or you just dive in? Thanks.
Karina, that’s a great question. The best was to ease into a juice fast is to eat only fresh fruits and veggies a few days prior to your fast. That seems to be the best way to ease into it. It gets your body prepared for the fast by consuming the same stuff you will juice in a fast. Or you could just dive right in like some people do. Hope this helps!
Today is day 3 of my juice fast. I have to say I haven’t had any real detox symptoms but that may be because I gave up caffeine 2 weeks before starting and have been eating a whole food diet for the last month. I wish I could say I have lots of energy but that hasn’t hit me yet. Gonna keep it up for at least 7 days to see how I feel. I am so glad I found this site. It has answered lots of my questions
Congrats on starting your fast Kidknees! Once you pass detox you’ll start to get that energy. Keep me posted and I’m here if you have any questions.
Hello! I am on day 2 of the 30 day juice fast, and my only concern is that I am not getting enough fiber. Is it okay to add flaxseeds or chia seeds to the juice. If so, which would you recommend?
Hopefully this will help clear up the issue of fiber and juicing for you. You don’t need insoluble fiber on a juice fast.
Juicing FAQ: How Do You Get Fiber in Your Diet?
There are two types of fibers; insoluble and soluble. The soluble fibers break down in water and are passed through you’re system. The insoluble fibers are what remain in the pulp. Insoluble fiber helps to bulk up stools and promote regular bowel movements. Since you aren’t juicing for 100% of your entire life, you will get the insoluble fiber when you start eating solids again. Also, you have to realize that the insoluble fibers help to promote digestion, and when your juicing, there is really nothing to digest after a few days since juices are absorbed and not digested. ( Taken from the Juice Faq http://www.justonjuice.com/juicing-faq/#20 )
I would not suggest adding flax or chia into your juice fast. The straight fruit and veggie juice is all you need. Remember, your body doesn’t digest the juice, it absorbs it. That is one of the functions of the juice fast as it rests and cleans your digestive system. When you add stuff like flax, chia or other fibers/solids to your juice, that stuff has to be digested and it takes you out of the fast. So just stick to the fruits and veggies and you’ll be fine. Hope this helps.
Great. Thank you! can you also tell me the benefits to juicing my own stuff vs using Naked Juice for the diet?
Kelly, I did an experiment and tried to do a three day fast on just naked juice once. It wasn’t near successful in weight loss or health. The reason being is that while you are still getting nutrients the naked juice is pasteurized. That cuts down the quality big time as a lot of the health benefits are taken out.
Don’t get me wrong, the naked juice is great here and there but I wouldn’t rely on it for every juice.
I noticed I wasn’t urinating as much or even feeling as good on the naked juice compared to the fresh stuff. I still lost weight but only about 30% of the weight compared to when I juice fresh.
Hope that answers your question.
Also! Does it help with belly fat??
Yes Kelly, if you juice right and correctly you will lose weight. Everyone is different but when you lose weight it generally starts from the head down. So you will lose stomach fat if you juice for a week or two.
Hi!
I have been interested in juicing for quite some time now, but I have a LOT of stomach issues…..mainly it being super sensitive to fasts, clenses etc. and I have a very uncomfortable, and un fun side effects (spending a lot of time in the bathroom) and that is embarressing at work! Does this juice fast effect stomachs a lot? I cant’ afford to have to be in the bathroom most the day as I work 13 hr days.
Any fast you do will effect your stomach since you are completely changing your eating routine. There are certain things that will make it better and some that will make it hard on your stomach. If you have plenty of lemon, ginger, and celery in your juice it would help your stomach issues as they promote good digestion and relief of stomach problems.
I recently bought a juicer and my husband and I are going to try a 7 day fast. I have quit smoking and gained 40 lbs. My husband has severe arthritis in his back and hips he also is overweight and I thought juicing would be good for both of us. My question is my granddaughter is 14 and obese we have been walking 2.5 miles everyday after school. She wants to juice with me is it safe for her to do so. She is very motivated as she has lost 4 lbs last week just from walking. Please let me know as soon as possible. Thanks for all the tip and tricks. Love your site.
Charlotte, it’s safe for her to juice. She should be fine. You all sound very motivated and ready to go! Please keep me posted on your fast, I’m anxious to hear how all of you do during your juice fast! If you have any questions at all, please let me know. I’ll be here for you.
what about coffee and wine?
Pam, coffee contains caffeine and wine contains alcohol, during a juice fast you are trying to rid your system of both of these. You’d be working against what your fast is trying to accomplish by consuming either coffee or wine while on your juice fast. Hope this helps.
Hi! This is an awesome post! I’m a blogger, too, and I recognize a good writer when I see one. 😀 I’m 12 years old and my mom and I are going to do a week long juice fast starting on Monday. This has been extremely helpful, thank you!
Emma, that’s great that you and your mother are planning to do a week long juice fast! If I can be of any help just let me know. Link me your blog, I’d love to take a look
Hi, I have some questions that I hope you can answer. I am 47 and my hair is thinning, enough so my hair dresser suggested we change my style. I had noticed I was seeing more hair in the drain a few months ago. I have decided to do a cleanse to see if this will detox my system, but I take medication. I take Lyrica and I am concerned that cleansing will not work since I take that med.
Jenny, cleansing will work just fine with your meds. You should consult with your doctor first as I’m not familiar with those meds or the reason try were prescribed to you.
Strawberries are great for hair growth. I’d make sure to juice plenty of strawberries on your fast. Hope this helps!
Hi! Im excited to say im going to be trying your three day juice plan, eventually working my way up to the seven day plan and so on. I recently got diagnosed with pre cancer abnormal cells, I hv two small children and run low on energy all the time. Im hoping this journey will not only improve my health but also give me the energy I so desperately need!
Shay, I’m sorry to hear about the diagnosis. I’m glad you decided to juice and I hope you continue on to do more than 3 days to reap all the benefits juicing can give you. I think after 3 days you will feel the energy I’ll be here if you have any questions Shay! You should post in the forum ( http://www.justonjuice.com/forum ) There are plenty of juicers in there that can help support and motivate you when you start your juice fast.
What are your thoughts on food combining? I’ve heard that we should only juice veggies w/veggies and fruits w/fruits. How much of a difference do you think it makes. I’m getting ready to start a fast, so I would like to get as much out of it as possible. Thanks in advance!
Diana, it’s perfectly fine to juice fruits and vegetables together. The reason some people do say not to mix fruits and vegetables together is because your body breaks down fruits and vegetables differently. Since you’re are juicing, the nutrients from the fruits and vegetables are being absorbed nearly instantly upon consuming. There’s nothing to worry about but it’s ideal to keep your fruit to vegetable intake about 20/80. Juice more fruits in the morning and mostly greens in the afternoon. Hope this helps.
I’m thinking on starting a fast but I’m currently breast feeding.
Is it healthy, if so how many days?
Thank you
Valeria, thanks for your comment. The best way to know what is best for you and your baby is to check with your pediatrician. I only way I would think it would be okay is if you continued to take a prenatal vitamin during your fast. But for you and your baby specifically it’s best that you ask advice from your pediatrician as the problem I do see is that once you go on a fast, toxins are released from your body and may end up in your milk. So I would highly suggest talking with your doc to ensure a fast is going to be healthy for the both of you before making the decision to juice right now.
Something to mention to people that are just starting juicing. When I started juicing a few years back my body wasn’t used to the concentrated vegetable juice and it gave me a stomach ache. I started taking digestive enzymes to help with that, it worked like a charm. What do you think about digestive enzymes??
Hi CT, thanks for the comment. As for stomach aches it’s ideal to include lemon and ginger in your juices followed up by a good amount of water. That can usually relieve stomach aches caused by highly concentrated juices. I’ve never had to use digestive enzymes but here is how they work. Digestive enzymes will break down macromolecules in order to help facilitate their absorption by your body. When you’re juice fasting you are taking in vitamins and nutrients that get absorbed almost instantly upon drinking so I’m not sure how adding more digestive enzymes through a supplement would help but I’m sure in some cases it might. Here’s a great article on enzymes that suggests the best approach to obtaining optimum enzyme levels is through raw fruits and vegetables.

Excellent topic and I’d love to do some more research on digestive enzymes. Thanks for the comment CT!
Are there any juicers that you could recommend? What is the difference between a masticating juicer and the other one? Also can you tell me why everyone loves wheatgrass so much? Just heard about juicing and the great benefits. Thanks for your help!
Kamilia, thanks for the comment. I recommend you take a look at ( http://www.justonjuice.com/juicers ). There are three juicers there that I recommend. I have used all three. They are all fantastic and will do great for your juice fast! The masticating juicer crush and squeeze the juice out of the produce while centrifugal juicers shred the produce and extract the juice out of them. Centrifugal juicers are more common, less expensive and tend to get the job done faster. Masticating juicers will extract more juice but take longer. Both are great and it really depends on your preference.
Wheatgrass has so many superior qualities so I’ll just list a few: Lowers blood pressure, stimulates thyroid gland, restores alkalinity to the blood, protects blood and liver, fights tumors, neutralizes toxins, contains beneficial enzymes, and is remarkably similar to our own blood. It’s really great but I would suggest a masticating juicer if you plan to juice wheatgrass a lot. Hope this helps, I’ll be here if you have any questions.
Where would one buy wheat grass? I’ve only seen this at a juice bar.
I’ve seen wheatgrass at my local whole foods store but its not cheap and if you’re using a centrifugal juicer the majority of wheatgrass is wasted. It’s great to add if your using a masticating juicer though.
I’ve tried to drink juiced wheatgrass twice in the past and got so nauseated I had to lay down on the floor at work. After reading about the benefits I’d like to try it again, but am a little scared to. Do you think that after I’ve been on a juice fast for a while I’d be able to tolerate it better? Maybe my body was just too full of toxins at the time??
PattiRob, to be honest wheat grass tastes like grass. You either like it or you don’t. You can try putting a bit of lemon and ginger in it. Do that and just toss it back quick. Wheat grass does have many benefits so it is great for you. You may be able to handle it better after a while on the juice fast though. Good luck, and don’t try to sip it. Just slam it back like a shot and follow it up with some fresh juice or water.
Thanks, I’ll try it again after I know I’m really detoxed!!
Sounds good, keep me posted PattiRob!
So glad I found your site. I have been talking myself into doing another juice fast. I did a 21 day juice fast nearly two years ago to drop some weight that I had gained while obtaining a college degree. I ended up losing 24 lbs and getting pregnant; this was following 10+ years of infertility. So I am a firm believer in the health benefits of juicing. I am have gained 50 lbs and am working on my masters degree so looking to drop some weight and detox! My initial goal is 30 days but would love to go longer if I can.
Robin, that’s an awesome story! Juicing has so many benefits it’s unbelievable! 30 days is a great goal and one that is very doable. Since you’ve already done a juice fast you know what to expect this time around. Just set your goal and reach for it. Let me know if you have any questions along the way. I would suggest signing up at the forums ( http://www.justonjuice.com/forum ) and talking with others who are juicing. We are always doing group juice fasts so I’m sure there will be plenty of other people interested in juicing along with you. It will be a great journey and one I’m excited to hear about as you progress. Thanks for the post Robin!
Starting my first juice fast, doing the 2 week plan. I have dabbled in making juice recipes for the last week and have just become enthralled with the concept of juicing for weight loss, detox, and basic refocus of my mind after quitting smoking and putting on 50 pounds. UGH!! I am finding your blog very useful and easy to follow and was compelled to thank you for that!!! I hope you have an amazing day!!!
Dana, thank you for the awesome comments! Juicing is so great and beneficial for you, and I’m glad you have decided to do the 2 week plan. It has completely changed my life around and I’m thankful for it. If you have any questions or need some motivation I’ll be here for you. Also, head to the forums ( http://www.justonjuice.com/forum ) and start posting. We currently have a 3 Day Group Juice fast going on. It will give you a lot of motivation to juice at the same time others are juicing. Hope to see you there!
I am diabetic and been having some trouble with the blood sugar dropping will the Juice fast work with diabetes?
Hello Freida, I get a lot of questions pertaining to diabetics. You can juice but before you decide to do a juice fast you should consult with you doctor. It’s important to not only get advice but to also discuss how to adjust any medications while on the juice fast. If you do juice, you should aim for a maximum of 1 fruit per juice. You should also include more protein in your juices and drink at least 64 ounces of water each day. Hope that helps Freida
Hi! I am glad to announce that I will be starting the juice fast tomorrow. I have a small question though, you said we should keep to at least 4 servings per day. Did you mean 4 serving per juice,or 4 servings total per day?
Nouran, congratulations on starting your juice fast! I suggest 4-6 servings of 16-20 ounces each per day. One serving should be between 16-20 ounces of juice. If you do that you will be fine. Just make sure you are drinking a juice every time you feel hungry and you will be fine. I’ll be here if you have any questions.
Hello! Thank you, that is very helpful and insightful! I have always been curious about juice fasts but your post has encouraged me to try it out. Your 3 day link isn’t working…. could you possibly check that out or send me what the link is supposed to go to please? Thank you very much
Parisa, thanks for pointing that out. I fixed the link on “How to juice fast” so the 3 day link is showing correctly now. Once you do a juice fast you’ll feel like a new person. It’s amazing how it works. Good luck on your juice fast when you decide to start one. I’ll be here if you have any questions.
Please disregard my other questions as I didn’t read thoroughly through this section! Thanks
No worries Lilly, glad to see you reading all the information you can about juicing. I remember how excited I was when I first started reading about it. I ordered my juicer and couldn’t wait to start juicing. Let me know if you have any questions. Happy Juicing!
Hi, just a quick question! I’m a nurse and currently I’m working night shifts. Any suggestions in regards to juicing then?
Can I premake a juice or two bring during my shift?
Katrina, that’s a great question and yes, you can juice while at work. When I started juicing I bought two air tight thermoses so I could take my juice with me. I would prepare the fruits and veggies the night before and place them in gallon size ziploc bags so they would be ready for me to juice in the morning. When morning came around I would make my breakfast juice, drink it and then make my lunch juices. I put my two lunch juices in the thermoses to take with me. They hold up well as long as you can put them in a fridge. I would make sure that the thermoses were filled to the top so there wasn’t any air in there. If you don’t have enough juice to fill them to the top, just top them off with a little bit of water. My thermoses were 18 ounces and were enough to keep me satisfied while at work. So you can definitely premake a juice or two to bring with you on your shift. I started out only bringing one but that just wasn’t enough for a long shift. I would suggest bringing two juices with you and drinking plenty of water throughout the day. Just set your goal, keep your focus and before you know it juicing will be second nature to you.
Katrina – I always save my kombucha bottles because they are 16oz and made of strong glass. I make mine in the morning as well before I get ready and put them in the fridge so that when its time to leave they’re a little cold and don’t get too warm on the drive in.
This is very interesting, You are a very skilled
